Debunking the Famous Car Maintenance Myths

Car Maintenance Myths

Anyone who owns a car has received an advice from their friends or family about its maintenance at some point. While these maintenance tips are offered in good faith, the fact is, they may not be in line with the expert opinions. So, stick around as we investigate and debunk the common myths about car maintenance.

Driving over 3000 miles without an oil change could result in engine seizure

oil change

While this might have been true about a decade ago but with the modern engine manufacturing technologies the newer generation models are designed to go approximately 5000 to 7000 miles after each oil change. It’s a good idea to consider your mechanics’ advice but it won’t take long to cross match that with the owner’s manual that states the actual instructions about the oil change. This might not be true for every vehicle on the road but a little due diligence could save you a lot of money.

Unless of course, you are in a habit of collecting empty oil containers.

Premium fuel could significantly improve the vehicle’s performance

Premium fuel

Remember that time when you decided to pay double the money at gas station for the premium fuel just so you could enjoy the extra power and performance but ended up getting the same performance as you did with the regular 87 octane fuel? That is because premium fuel is only for high-compression performance engines that run on higher temperature. So, unless it says so on your vehicle’s manual, premium fuel would not increase your vehicle’s performance.

You should always replace all four car tyres at the same time

When it comes to safety, car tyres are one thing you should never compromise on. But the question is, what to do when you get one of your tyres damaged beyond repair? You certainly shouldn’t wait for the rest three to wear out just so you could get them all replaced together. It is all right to replace one tyre so long it is of the same size and brand. Just be sure to rotate your tyres at the regular intervals.

The PSI (Pound-force per Square Inch) on your tyre sidewall tells the pressure you should have in your tire

tire pressure

Not really, the PSI on your tyre sidewall shows the maximum pressure your car tire is designed to hold. In order to check how much pressure, you should have in your tyres, you may want to look at your fuel-filler door, within your glove box or on the doorjamb sticker.

It’s not a good idea to keep your tyres pressurized to their full capacity. Not only could it cause the tyres to wear unevenly shortening their lifespan it but could also cause a number of other problems.

Braking noise is always produced by the worn-out pads

Braking noise

While it could be true for some times but that’s not always the case. In case you are not aware, your brake pads are built with indicators that rub against the rotor, producing a high-pitched sound once the pads have been worn down.

Sometimes, the braking noise could point towards the bigger or more complicated problems. It could be coming from struts or even the car body itself.

We often overlook the instructions provided by the manufacturers and act upon unreliable information. It’s amazing how we can avoid a lot of problems just by going through the user manual that comes with almost every vehicle.

Continental tyres Lebanon always encourages its customers to buy car tyres in dimension that are mentioned in the user manual as buying mismatched tyres could lead to a number of mechanical problems.
